New: the LuK RepSet DMF for passenger cars to fill the gap on the independent spare parts market

Caption:
The LuK RepSet DMF contains all parts required for the clutch repair including the dual mass flywheel.

Langen, September 2008. At the Automechanika 2008, Schaeffler Group Automotive Aftermarket presents a new practical repair kit – the LuK RepSet DMF. It contains the dual mass flywheel (DMF), a clutch disk and clutch pressure plate, the bolts required for installation and either a conventional release bearing or a hydraulic concentric slave cylinder (CSC). A second version of the LuK RepSet DMF comprises the damped flywheel clutch (DFC) – a pre-assembled unit incorporating the DMF, clutch disk and clutch pressure plate – as well as a conventional release bearing or hydraulic CSC.

By introducing the new repair kit Schaeffler Group Automotive Aftermarket meets a demand of the independent aftermarket so far unmet. Some types of DMF and clutch repair kits from different manufacturers are no longer compatible, as for example with the Audi A3 (8P), the Golf V (1H) and Golf V Plus (5M), the Passat (3C), the Seat Leon (1P) or the Skoda Octavia (1Z) 1.9 TDI. The solution to this problem is the new LuK RepSet DMF. In one single package it provides all necessary components and makes sure they actually fit together.

The repair kits LuK RepSet and the LuK RepSetPro continue to be part of the Schaeffler Group Automotive Aftermarket range of products as well as the LuK RepSet DMF. While both LuK RepSet and LuK RepSetPro comprise clutch disk and clutch pressure plate, the LuK RepSet usually comes with an additional conventional release bearing, and the LuK RepSetPro always contains a hydraulic CSC. Hence, all versions provide the parts required for a professional repair from a single kit and errors are excluded.

Whether LuK RepSet DMF, LuK RepSet or LuK RepSetPro – each kit component is supplied in OE quality and enables repair shops to provide value-added service.

The new and the tried-and-tested from the WD-40 Company:

WD-40 and 3-IN-ONE PROFESSIONAL – Quality for the workshop and the vehicle fleet

Chemical treatments are indispensable for work on both private and commercial vehicles: whether for repairs, maintenance or general care, they make work considerably easier. The multi-purpose oil, WD-40, is known and loved throughout the industry and beyond. Its main advantage lies in its unequalled versatility and, in very many instances, it is the mechanic's first choice if something "just won't budge". A good decision, however, which is confirmed time and again by the excellent results obtained. Nevertheless, in professional work there are also applications which require a more specialised tool. This is why the WD-40 Company decided to extend their product range. As from September, the new range of 3-IN-ONE PROFESSIONAL products will be available exclusively to professional users in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands at specialist outlets. There are six products, which combine the know-how of WD-40 and that of experienced practitioners for special areas of application. The new products will be presented to a wider public for the first time at Automechanika 2008 and will bring – literally – new colour to the market. Five of the products were awarded the DEKRA seal of approval even before they went on the market.

What does 3-IN-ONE PROFESSIONAL stand for?

The user-friendly nature of the products ranks top for professional users. Each of the six 3-IN-ONE PROFESSIONAL products – from the High-Performance Penetrant Spray, the All-purpose Cleaner and Degreaser, the Silicone Spray to the Quick Start Engine Starter and Conditioner, the Universal Lithium Grease and the White Lithium Grease Spray – combines the three product characteristics most sought after in the trade – precisely 3-IN-ONE. This is reflected, graphically, on the packaging by means of symbols. Moreover, the different colours in each case make them extremely easy to recognise. All 3-IN-ONE PROFESSIONAL products impress with their quality and their effectiveness. The latter was verified by an independent test institute even before the products went on the market: all five products tested by DEKRA were awarded the DEKRA seal of approval. Moreover, the high-performance penetrating oil, the silicone spray and the universal cleaner are available, as is WD-40 already, with the Smart Straw option. The innovative design of the spray nozzle allows both a more targeted spray and a wider spray action with one and the same can - and saves the user time and effort into the bargain. So there is no need to go looking for the straw before tackling precision work.

The new 'experts' at a glance

The High Performance Penetrant oil (orange label) has a particularly fast-acting formula, thanks to its combination of oil, solvents and additives. A further advantage is its powerful capillary action. Thanks to its low surface tension, it gets into even the tiniest spaces. It also lubricates and protects, thus directly preventing any new corrosion.

The Silicone Spray (yellow label) also offers lubrication and protection – but in this case with a non-greasy formula. The Silicone Spray, with its high viscosity, serves as a lubricant, protective film and release agent. It can be used at temperatures of up to 200 degrees Celsius. It is quick-drying and colourless. It is especially good for plastics and rubber, where no-mess application can be guaranteed.

The water-soluble All-Purpose Cleaner and Degreaser (green label) is recommended for loosening rust, old grease, oil and layers of grime on metal and hardened plastics. The loosened grime can simply be washed off with cold water. The cleaned surface is then ready for further treatment.

The Engine Starter and Conditioner, recognisable by its purple/blue label, is suitable for both petrol and diesel engines. It also helps to start engines in especially cold and damp weather. It works quickly and reliably, as soon as the liquid comes into contact with the air. Because of the high proportion of the active agent with a low flash point, the combustibility of the fuel is considerably improved. Even in adverse conditions it ensures that the engine starts without damaging the engine or the battery.

The White Lithium Grease Spray and the Universal Lithium Grease, both bearing a light blue label, complete the product range. The White Lithium Grease Spray is a multi-purpose, lithium-based lubricant, which lends itself particularly well to use in vehicle technology. It is extremely water-repellent and will withstand very high pressures. When sprayed on from an adequate distance, it adheres extremely well. The white colour of the grease makes it easy to check visually. Moving parts are protected within a temperature range of minus 20 to plus 140 degrees Celsius. The Universal Lithium Grease cannot be sprayed on, but otherwise has the same outstanding properties. It is easily applied with a brush or spatula on chains and gears, for example.

The "Classic"

Seized or rusted-in screws can be freed in no time at all with WD-40. Mechanisms, such as steering components, which have become stiff in bad weather, regain their ease of movement with WD-40. This low-viscosity oil is notable for its extreme capillary action. It displaces moisture, it silences annoying squeaks and cleans dirty parts. The most diverse sorts of grime, e.g. on the wheels or in the engine compartment, are easily removed with WD-40. It is also very good for cleaning electrical contacts. WD-40 is a rust remover, lubricant, contact spray, anti-corrosion agent and parts cleaner all in one. This all-purpose care product penetrates into all the crucial places, thus preventing wear and tear.

You will find WD-40 at Automechanika in Hall 9.1, Stand B45

Kaeser’s compact 'Aircenter' packages combine ultra-quiet performance with exceptional power, efficiency and ease of maintenance.

“Aircenter”: Compact Efficiency

Cost-effective compressed air production, treatment and storage with minimal space requirement: The ‘Aircenter’ series from Kaeser Kompressoren features the very latest technology to provide unrivalled user advantages and exceptional performance.

Kaeser’s ‘Aircenter’ packages operate quietly and efficiently to provide a reliable and cost-effective source of application-specific compressed air. With a footprint of approximately 1m², these compact units are the perfect choice for installation in environments where space is at a premium.

At the heart of these versatile ‘Aircenter’ packages is a high performance SX, SM or SK series rotary screw compressor. Covering a free-air delivery range from 0.33 m³/min to 2.2 m³/min at 8 bar and equipped with drive motors from 2.2 kW to 15 kW, these units ensure exceptionally low noise levels between 60 and 65 dB(A). 11 and 15 bar versions are also available for applications that require larger volumes of compressed air.

Furthermore, the 'Aircenter 12' and 'Aircenter '21' can be equipped with Kaeser’s “SFC” variable speed control, which allows compressor performance to be precisely matched to suit fluctuating compressed air demand. An integrated refrigeration dryer ensures reliable compressed air drying and is thermally shielded to prevent exposure to heat from the compressor package. Air quality can also be exactly tailored to suit an application’s specific air needs with the use of optionally available filters. The compressed air is stored in an air receiver installed beneath the compressor. The compressor, dryer and air receiver are enclosed within a single housing.

In keeping with the turnkey design, all ’Aircenter’ systems are ready for immediate operation once the unit has been connected to the mains supply and compressed air network. Every unit uses a flow optimised “Sigma Profile” fluid-cooled airend and a ‘EU-eff1’ rated motor to guarantee excellent specific power with high energy-efficiency.

Effective sound insulation and low airend speeds further help to keep sound emissions to a minimum. In addition, a high-efficiency cooling system provides the motor and fluid / compressed air coolers with fresh cooling air drawn in from the ambient surroundings to achieve exceptionally low compressed air discharge temperatures.

The internal “Sigma Control” provides automatic system monitoring and precisely adjusts compressor performance to match actual compressed air demand. Moreover, it enables the compressed air supply system to be seamlessly integrated into a centralised control system.

Auxiliary spotlights "Rallye 3003 Blue" and "Rallye 3003 Compact Blue" (right) from Hella.

Hella presents the new auxiliary spotlight "Rallye 3003 Compact"

Lippstadt/Frankfurt, September 2008. Compact dimensions, yet with all the quality features of its "older brother": this is how the new auxiliary spotlight "Rallye 3003 Compact" is to be launched on the market.

The new Premium auxiliary light "Rallye 3003 Compact" from Hella combines innovative lighting technology and an unmistakeable housing design – with a real glass lens in a modern clear-glass look, silver design ring with embossed product description and high-quality screw attachment.

The sturdy and impact-resistant housing has been designed for the toughest of applications, including those off the beaten track. With compact dimensions of 17.2 x 19.3 x 11.8 centimetres (diameter x attachment height x design depth), this light is ideal for surface-mounting to compact SUVs, pick-ups, real off-roaders and small light commercial vehicles.
Bright and with homogeneous illumination, the auxiliary spotlight's High-Boost reflector projects the light onto the road with a range of up to 500 metres and guarantees good visibility and active driving safety both in the dark and in poor weather conditions.

The more homogeneous illumination of the roadway is possible thanks to computer-optimised precision matching of light source and free-form technology. "High-Boost" means that pure aluminium is used for vapour-plating the mirror layer in a high vacuum. An extremely thin protective film on the reflector, only a few nanometres thick, ensures the high headlight power is guaranteed over a long time. The new auxiliary spotlight is also available as the "Rallye 3003 Compact Blue" with a blue cover lens. This does not impair light output and the light colour remains white.

Thule launches world’s first e-bike carrier.

The market for electrically powered bicycles - e-bikes – is booming all over Europe. But with e-bikes being wider and heavier than regular bicycles they are not suited for most regular cycle carriers. Vehicle accessory company Thule is therefore now launching the world’s first carrier for e-bikes.

The trend with electrically powered bicycles is growing by the day. E-bikes seam to be what many have waited for when it comes to leaving the car and taking to the saddle, both for commuting to work and for getting around in their free time.

Sales of more than 200 000 e-bikes are predicted for next year in northern Europe alone, says Robby De Cock – product manager at Thule.

E-bikes have a small electrical motor that aids the rider when pedalling gets heavy. This also makes the bikes heavier and wider than regular bicycles. Something that calls for special transport solutions.

E-bikes are perfect to bring on holidays, De Cock continues.
You can go for long day trips without getting tired, even if you are in the mountains. But you still get the exercise!

To accommodate for this need Thule has developed the worlds first car mounted bike carrier specifically for e-bikes – Thule EuroPower.

- A regular bicycle weighs somewhere between 15 – 20 kg, says Robby De Cock
- An e-bike can often weigh up to 30 kg, with two bikes meaning 60 kg’s on the carrier.
- Our e-bike carrier has been specifically constructed to be able to handle the higher weight.

A further consideration is that many e-bike buyers are aged from their mid-50s upwards, and might find it a strain to lift 30 kg up onto a bike carrier. For this reason Thule EuroPower can be equipped with a detachable ramp on which the bike can be rolled on to the carrier.

It’s a clever solution that makes it possible for anyone and everyone to take their e-bike with them without having to ask for help for loading or unloading.

Europower is tiltable so that the boot can be accessed even with bikes loaded. The bikes are secured to the carrier with a quick-lock moveable frame holder.
Like all other Thule bike carriers it has undergone full safety testing at Thules test center in Hillerstorp, Sweden.

World premiere at Automechanika 2008:

Hella presents the new generation of the auxiliary-spotlight series "Luminator" with xenon light

Lippstadt/Frankfurt, September 2008. With the top-of-the-range "Luminator" series, Hella is again setting standards in the fields of lighting technology and design for xenon auxiliary spotlights. The new generation is also a convincing choice thanks to the integration for the first time of the xenon ballast in the housing of the light. The new generation of the "Luminator" series with xenon light will be presented for the first time at Automechanika 2008.

The lighting specialists have worked hard and made the Luminator Xenon even better. For example, the previously separate electronic ballast was integrated into the housing, thus saving space. This makes installation on the cabin roof or on the front apron easier, as no additional protected space has to be found for the ballast. The external form makes the Luminator Xenon stand out from the crowd: The housing, which has long-life matt-black paintwork, and the reinforced, sturdy holder are made of extremely tough, shock-resistant diecast zinc. This makes the auxiliary light fit for the hardest continuous use or for tough off-road terrain. The new, distinctive identifying feature is the chrome-plated Design ring with the inscription "High Intensity Discharge Xenon".
The real glass lens with a modern clear-glass look allows a clear view of the high-sheen aluminized high-boost reflector. High-boost means that pure aluminium is used when metallizing the reflector mirror layer in a high vacuum. A protection layer on the reflector just a few nanometres thick ensures that the high performance of the light remains ensured in a lasting manner.

With its bright and homogenous illumination, the high-boost reflector of the auxiliary spotlight brings the white xenon light, which is almost as bright as daylight, onto the road with a range of almost 500 metres (in the case of two lights). It provides good visibility and active driving safety in the dark and in adverse weather conditions and reduces signs of fatigue when driving. Thanks to computer-optimized fine tuning of the D1S xenon bulb and free-form technology, the road is illuminated evenly and extremely brightly. Naturally, the new Luminator generation meets all test criteria that are a matter of course for Hella as the leading lighting and electronics partner of the automotive industry. The promise of quality "Made in Germany" is manifested visually next to the Hella logo on the rear of the housing.

The new Luminator generation consists of three series:
Due to its impressive external dimensions (223 x 239 x 153 centimetres' diameter x mounting height x installation depth), the "Luminator Xenon" is particularly suitable for trucks, large pick-ups and off-road vehicles. The "Luminator Compact Xenon" has the same lighting technology as its big brother, but, due to its compact external dimensions (171 x 184 x 139 centimetres' diameter x mounting height x installation depth). The third in the series is the even more compact "Luminator X" (127 x 130 x 116 centimetres' diameter x mounting height x installation depth).

NEW DEVELOPMENT: MAHA Shock Tester MST 3000

For easy and accurate testing of shock absorbers and suspensions

Indirect Shock Testing based on the new THETA principle Shock absorbers as safety relevant component.

Safe driving with intact shock absorbers.

Shock absorbers represent an essential safety-relevant component in motor vehicles: a rule of thumb is that the longer they are in use, the aging process makes damping less effective and negatively effects other damping elements, such as rubber mountings.

Unsafe driving

Poor steering control due to insufficient tire ground contact at braking or “buckling” in the curve are characteristics of reduced shock absorber performance. Another point is that the functionality of electronic safety systems such as vehicle brake ABS systems are negatively effected. Extreme difference in the shock effectiveness of the right and left-hand wheel of an axle lead to substantial driving instability. To minimize or eliminate these danger sources, these qualities need to be clearly qualified - and this can only be done with a physical unit .

A “unit” clearly qualifies the shock absorber quality .

The new MAHA-Shock-Tester MST 3000 was developed based on the generally applicable physical-mathematical correlation of the resonance principle:

The Lehrsche damping measurement δ
or the damping degree δ.

Advantage: the test result is a physical variable.
As an explanation:
The axle damping is dependent upon several damping components in the axle system- in particular from the installed shock absorbers- and from the axle bearing. Shock absorbers can only be tested indirectly in an installed condition. For this reason the entire axle damping quality is measured and from this measurement the quality of the damping components, in particular the shock absorbers, can be ascertained.
Using the basic principle for easy and accurate testing of motor vehicle axle damping, it is possible to compare the results of various test methods with one another, assuming the test stands measure the same physical variables. The concepts and systems on the market to date have not fulfilled these requirements because they all work with different principles. It was possible to show the quantitative test results, however, only with principle-based, manufacturer-specific variables. An evaluation of the axle damping quality was only possible if one and the same principle was used for the test!

The new DELTA-principle from MAHA is used to establish a clearly defined value identifying exactly when the time has come to exchange various damping components.

MAHA’s new DELTATHETA principle represents substantial progress.

It is all about offering a definite statement of quality for the tested axle’s damping components. MAHA’s new basic principle has made this a reality.

Advantages:
• Clear measurement results thanks to a measurable physical unit.
• Easy and accurate test.
• Comparibility of all measurements results attained using this principle.
• A clearly defined value is the basis for deciding when to exchange worn damping components.

In this way, ideal prerequisites have been created should axle damping/shock absorber inspection become obligatory for motor vehicles- this would of course require a uniform test principle. CITA Brüssel (umbrella organization for controllers) has, for a long time now, advocated the introduction of obligatory testing.
The requirements are already met: a procedure to show the quality of axle damping in a measurable unit (Lehrsches damping measurement or damping degree) has been created by MAHA, along with the suitable test device for accurate, easy testing of damping components in an installed condition providing the measurement values needed to evaluate quality; the MAHA-Shock-Tester 3000. An essential safety factor is the establishment of damping measurement limit values for damping components which are no longer fully functional.

MAHA Shock-Tester MST 3000 - Function and Performance

The MST 3000 essentially consists of 3 elements: the floor assembly with two test plates (parallelogram guided) – for the oscillation excitement in vertical direction. Both wheels of an axle to be tested are positioned on the plates. The plates can be operated together or individually. They are driven with electro-motors, which provide the excitement frequency via controllable RPM’s. The floor assembly is installed inground in the workshop floor - it can also be integrated in a test lane. Graphical and digital display and documentation of measurement values appear on a screen. The measurement values can be called up and printed out at any time again. An alternative is the electro-cabinet (stand-up console) with control and display elements. Test results are shown on two well-structured pointer indicators in addition to a control for the fully automatic test procedure. To evaluate the damping measurement, they can be compared to new and limit values tables.
Optional: Printer for documentation of the measurement results.

Description of Features:
• Fully automatic test procedure
• Automatic test stand start after loading both test plates.
• Plate excitement via electro-motors up to 10 Hz.
• Coast down to standstill of maximum oscillation amplitude via inductive electronic displacement sensor.
• Evaluation of measurement results as units in THETA. (Lehrsches damping measurement or damping degree)
• Automatic measurement of axle and total weight.

MAHA’s innovation.

Two relevant innovations have been introduced with the development of the new MAHA-Shock-Tester MST 3000 :
First of all, the proven applicability and sensible usage of the testing principle “Lehrsch Damping Measurement δ“ and secondly, the optimum technical version of the MST 3000. Numerous trials and test series have shown that the testing principle in conjunction with the MST 3000 from MAHA is ideally suited for providing safe and informative values about the quality of shock absorbers. Just one of the many innovations developed and realized by MAHA reacting to market needs and protecting the lives of people.

Getting the right additive for the engine

LIQUI MOLY additives clean and care for engines

In the daily routine of any workshop, lots of the problems that crop up in vehicles can be quickly and effectively dealt with by using an additive. And, as well as being useful in solving problems, they also serve to prevent them arising in the first place. LIQUI MOLY is an experienced manufacturer in this field and offers the whole range of additives for fuels, engine and gear-box oils as well as for the cooling system – all 'made in Germany'.

Old engines get a whole new lease of life, but the inclusion of additives is very important even for the most modern power units. Today's generation of engines have higher and higher power outputs over a longer life-span whilst consuming less and less fuel. These technically highly sophisticated units require special lubricants and fuels. "But even these cannot prevent resins, soot particles, condensates, oil mists and blow-by gases occurring," explains the Head of Research and Development at LIQUI MOLY, Uwe Krügel. The result is that, without being able to be detected from the outside, carbon is deposited in the combustion chambers, in particular on the valves and injectors. Krügel continues: "These deposits reduce the efficiency of the engine and affect the smoothness of the engine, the exhaust values, the consumption and the power output."

This not infrequently results in expensive repairs to clogged or sticky injectors. An appropriate fuel additive efficiently dissolves this kind of deposit and cleans the injection system. Other additives improve the corrosion protection and help look after the engine. When used regularly, appropriate additives can offer vehicles effective and inexpensive protection over many years of service life.

Water damage

"Water is a stubborn and dangerous presence as far as engines are concerned," warns Liqui Moly's Head of Development. When vehicles stand idle for long periods, often with only partially filled petrol tanks, condensation occurs in the system. This sometimes also gets into the tank when filling up with petrol, which is very dangerous, since even small amounts of water can cause enormous damage to modern engines. The first sign is generally increasing noise in the fuel pump. A water-absorbing fuel additive will help solve this problem.

Most of the additives available today provide a combination of active agents which guarantee balanced, all-round protection. LIQUI MOLY's products also include a range of additives for special applications. They include a diesel fuel flow improver for extremely low temperatures, a lead substitute for lubricating and protecting the valves of older engines as well as performance enhancing additives. Products to help with the laying up of petrol-fuelled cars, and to protect against bacteria and the build-up of sludge in diesel tanks complete the range.

All running smoothly – oil additives

It is commonly said that formulae of modern motor oils are so sophisticated that additives are unnecessary. But a simple analogy tells us why the use of an additive makes sense: people who eat healthily, exercise regularly and maintain a balance in their stress levels don't necessarily need additional vitamins. But most people lack this balance, which is why vitamins are a sensible complement to their diet. It is exactly the same with additives. "An engine that always gets up to normal operating temperature and travels long distances does not necessarily need additives," explains Krügel, "but frequent short trips – and that means a frequently cold engine – mean that an additive is required. "Be it for protection against wear, a cleaner for the oil system, a viscosity improver or an additive to prevent loss of oil. There is a LIQUI MOLY product for every application: "We don't promise miracles, but experience shows that the appropriate additives have, in the past, solved a good many problems," reports the Head of the LIQUI MOLY Research Department. By investing in preventative measures, he suggests, you can very often avoid expensive repairs.

Quality is our pledge

Fuel and oil additives make up the lion's share of LIQUI MOLY's product range. Additives for cooling systems and gearboxes complete it. There is one rule for all products: only the best quality raw materials are used in manufacture, and they are then subject to numerous checks and controls.

" 'Made in Germany' is a seal of approval and our guarantee of quality for all our customers throughout the world," stresses Krügel. LIQUI MOLY's oil and fuel additives have been thoroughly tested by the German standards agency, (TÜV). These tests confirm the efficacy of the products, which are approved accordingly.

Good for the environment

Additives not only protect the engine, they also look after both your wallet and the environment: the use of certain additives reduces fuel consumption and decreases the amount of CO2 released. After all, clean engines run better and give more efficient combustion. "With increasingly stringent environmental policies, additives become more and more important. We can see great potential here when it comes to road traffic," says Krügel. Fuel and oil additives have their part to play as energy prices soar and it becomes necessary to conserve resources. "Less energy consumption always means fewer emissions and, in return, less expense for the consumer," explains LIQUI MOLY's Head of Research.

So that the Climate in your Vehicle is just right – The new MAHA Air Conditioning System Service Equipment MAC 2000

Air Conditioning Systems in Cars are becoming ever more Popular

More and more vehicles are equipped with them. In regions of the world which have warmer climates they are already standard equipment. And even in central Europe, air conditioning systems are no longer considered a special feature, but are listed as standard. And this, inspite of the increased fuel consumption required. Especially high performance cars are equipped with this feature, but increasingly smaller models also have it. As the slogan goes, “Once you have it you never want to be without it again.” In fact, it is very pleasant to drive in an air conditioned vehicle when the outside temperatures are hot. The driver can concentrate on driving, meaning that air conditioned cars provide an additional safety feature for drivers and the environment.

Consequences for the Service Sector

If it is true that already 60 to 70% of all cars have air conditioning systems installed, the service aspect becomes essential and commercially interesting. This cannot be done without air conditioning service equipment.
Fully automatic units like the MAC 2000 save money. The mechanic is not tied to the vehicle during the fully automatic service procedure.
MAHA is offering the MAC 2000 (MAC = MAHA Air Conditioning Unit) as a new addition to its product program. This replaces the earlier model RS2. An announcement for the future: this type of air conditioning service equipment is being planned for commercial vehicles – to round out the delivery program.

New MAHA Air Conditioning Service Equipment MAC 2000

All the service steps on the cooling system of the vehicle’s air conditioning system are executed fully automatically: recovery of refrigerant, recycling of it, (cleaning of solids caused by friction etc. separation of oil without which the compressor will not work properly), residual pressure measurement and evacuation, charging of oil for the compressor and refrigerant with UV additive (with filling quantity compensation of the service hose).
Leakage control is also part of the cycle. The large filling cylinder (heated, 15 kg content) favors quick filling and cleaning which is part of the MAC 2000 service package. The 500-ml old oil container facilitates longer exchange intervals. A measurement value printer, which is standard with diagnostic and service units, documents the data. There is also a charging quantity database and operator guidance with large display and manom - eter.
All these features guarantee an easy, secure operation and fast service procedure. This kind of service is not part of an obligatory inspection system, so a cost-related price is needed to make it attractive. And the MAC 2000 offers exactly these kinds of cost-reduction functional steps.

One axle roller brake testers: Model IW2 LON All-Wheel Drive and Model IW2 EUROSYSTEM All-Wheel Drive

MAHA has the following one axle roller brake testers for all-wheel drive in program.
Model IW2 LON all-wheel drive
and model IW2 EUROSYSTEM all-wheel drive,
each equipped with speed regulating test roller drives.

The permissable axle loads of the vehicle to be tested can be up to 3.5 or 5 t, suitable for cars, vans, or trucks up to the given axle loads. The allwheel drive testers for the IW4/IW7 series is available for the heavy duty vehicles up to 20 t axle load. Permissable track widths for the first test stands is 780 to 2.200 mm and/or up to 2.800 mm. Maximum test speed is 5 km/h. MAHA’s distinguishing high quality features can also be found in the additional features of these test stands: regulated drive with individually controlled rotating direction, large and easy-to-read display for the measurement values, optical brake force differential display, remote control, pedal force meter, electronic start up control and exit assistance, single wheel switch on, delayed switch on automatic, automatic slip switch off with measurement value display and re-start automatic, self-supporting enclosed roller set, roller surface either welded or synthetic coating, powder paint coating or galvanized version, TÜV- and GS tested.

Detailed Description of Functions

Two operating modes are possible dependent upon the type of all- wheel drive to be tested.

Regulated Synchronisation

For vehicles with automatically activated all-wheel drive which kicks in dependent upon the speed of vehicle drive. The activation threshold is at speed of approximately 2 km/h.
Using the SCM regulation (SCM = Speed Control Mode) developed and patented by MAHA both wheels are driven with the same rotating direction for forward drivng and with the same RPM for both test roller pairs. The motor RPM is regulated at a low speed. The all-wheel drive is not yet activated with the named vehicle types at a low RPM (smaller or equal to 2 km/h) When in this condition, the brake test is done as a normal standard test procedure.
Advantages: Both brakes of an axle can be tested with a single test procedure. No pedal force meter is needed to evaluate the brake force difference left/right.

Regulated Counter Rotation

For all other kinds of drive types.
The roller sets rotate counter direction and are regulated. It is absolutely necessary that during brake testing in counter rotation that both wheels of an axle have the exact same rotation speed. If this is not fulfilled, e.g. due to one-sided brake force, the cardan shaft begins inevitably to turn and in doing so transfers a certain brake force in the continuing process. However, often vehicles do not allow additional cardan shaft rotations because, e.g. they are joined with the second axle whose wheels are either positioned on the floor or are blocked by the brake force. Consequently, the rotation and force are not released to the cardan shaft, but are diverted to the wheel with the lowest brake force. Here we are dealing with a mechanical coupling, which divides up the brake force from one side to both sides.
In order to fulfill the demands of the brake test only with wheel rotation for forward driving two test runs for each axle are required. A pedal force meter is definitely required.

All-wheel drive principles which cannot be tested with this test stand

All all-wheel vehicles can be tested. Up to now, there has been no all-wheel test mode (e.g. counter run only) which can test all all-wheel vehicles. MAHA combines both methods (regulated synchronous and counter run) in one test stand offering the best possible universality.

Genuine diesel particulate filter retrofit solutions from Volkswagen awarded with environmental accolade

Picture:
Retrofitting a diesel particulate filter at a VW repair shop

Success in Automechanika Green Directory competition

Volkswagen has already delivered more than 135,000 genuine diesel particulate filters for retrofitting

Frankfurt/Main / Wolfsburg / Kassel – Ahead of Automechanika, genuine diesel particulate filter retrofit solutions from Volkswagen have received the Green Directory award for innovation and environmental achievement. The contribution of retrofitted particulate filters from Volkswagen in reducing emissions was especially convincing. "The award is a confirmation of our work in reducing particulate emissions. Our range of filters for retrofitting significantly cuts emissions and outperforms the stringent requirements of environmental legislation. The Green Directory award is the best evidence of this," says Rodolfo Bürgi, Head of Genuine Parts Sales with the Volkswagen Group. To date, more than 135,000 Volkswagen vehicles have been retrofitted with a Volkswagen genuine diesel particulate filter.

Volkswagen is well-prepared for increased demand for retrofitted filters in response to the new tax concessions applicable in Germany since April 1, 2007, offering the widest range of filters for retrofitting. Diesel particulate filters are available for almost all Volkswagen models. Genuine particulate filters underwent long-term trials and were individually developed for more than 100 models and engine options. To date, Volkswagen has supplied more than 135,000 diesel particulate filters for retrofitting to vehicles in the key markets of Germany and the Netherlands.

As genuine parts, these maintenance-free diesel particulate filters meet the high quality standards of the Group and independent product tests and significantly reduce particle emissions. The filter efficiencies reached are considerably higher than those required by legislation. Studies have shown that the retrofitting of a filter has a positive impact on the resale value of a used vehicle.

For vehicles which are more than five years old or have more than 80,000 kilometers on the clock, German legislation calls for the replacement of the catalytic converter when a particulate filter is retrofitted. This is why Volkswagen offers combination systems for most of the models in this age group. The oxidation-type catalytic converter is already included in the retrofit system and in the package price. In contrast to other systems available on the market, it is not necessary to replace the catalytic converter separately.

For example, it costs only 599 euros to fit a particulate filter to a Passat or Audi A3 1.9 TDI. The cost is further reduced by a state subsidy of 330 euros and an additional tax concession of about 60 euros. From 1 September to 31 October this year, Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Audi are additionally offering a subsidy of 150 euros for each vehicle retrofitted with a genuine diesel particulate filter.

Volkswagen shows its genuine diesel particulate filter retrofit solutions at Automechanika 2008, the leading international trade fair for the automotive industry in Frankfurt/Main from September 16 to 21.

New at this year’s automechanika: Meyle Products gives four-year warranty on HD parts

Passing advantages along to service center customers and enhancing confidence – new, improved ball joints and stabilizer links at the fair – theme tunnel to show the process of improving spare parts

Frankfurt, Germany, 16 September 2008. This year’s automechanika marks the beginning of a new epoch on the open automotive parts market: spare parts manufacturer Meyle Products will be giving service centers a four-year warranty on its HD (Heavy Duty) parts. Individually replaceable ball joints and improved stabilizer links are new additions to the HD program that will be on show in Frankfurt. Visitors will be able to see first-hand how Meyle engineers optimize HD parts in a theme tunnel. Meyle Products will be exhibiting at automechanika in the Frankfurt Exhibition Center in Hall 5.1. at Stand A10.

“A four-year warranty is unparalleled on the German automotive spare parts market. By offering our new warranty, we are giving service centers a new sales argument to foster trust and give their customers an incentive to have overdue repairs carried out,” explains Meyle Sales Manager Lars Gaertner. “Above-average service lives are a hallmark of Meyle HD parts. Our goal is to shield repair centers against complaints and give them the opportunity to generate service sales with satisfied customers.” The four-year warranty, which covers all products in the Heavy Duty line, will apply as of the first day of the trade fair. Meyle assigns HD parts numbers to all parts that have been improved over the version available from the vehicle manufacturer or OE vendor. To date, around 300 parts – primarily related to steering & suspension, vibration control and cooling technology – have been enhanced significantly.

Meyle is presenting numerous additions to its HD product line at the world’s largest trade fair for the automotive supply industry, including ball joints for the Iveco Daily II and stabilizer links for the Ford Mondeo, Opel Astra and other vehicles. One of the advantages of HD ball joints over the originals is that they are individually replaceable. A worn rubber-metal part thus no longer means replacing the entire control arm. Modifications to HD stabilizer links to improve their ruggedness and extend their service lives include increasing their ball diameters, thus distributing loads over a greater area. A multimedia theme tunnel will give visitors insights into the process of improving spare parts, from development to production, including information on the materials used, quality assurance and manufacturing processes.

Meyle Products will be exhibiting at automechanika 2008 in the Frankfurt Exhibition Center from the 16th to the 21st of September in Hall 5.1. at Stand A10.

Automakers rely on Kamei as an OEM partner

Wolfsburg-based company Kamei has also had a successful development as an OEM supplier for the automobile industry. On the basis of its recognized know-how in polymer processing and a consistent strategy of quality, Kamei has also established itself as an OEM supplier. In addition to Mercedes-Benz and BMW, the Volkswagen Zubehör GmbH is also now one of the company's customers.

The foundation for today's flourishing OEM business division was laid three years ago with a consistent strategy of quality: for Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH, Kamei already produces an exclusive roof box line in the Mercedes design, which is marketed worldwide via the Stuttgart-based group's distribution partners. There, too, safety, exclusivity and individuality are the main focus: the latest result of the cooperative relationship is a roof box in the Mercedes special colour of “calcite-white”. What makes this stylish box even more remarkable is the fact that it is made of a solid-coloured ABS plastic with a high-grade acrylic surface. A special colour-matching process allows for the perfect reproduction of the original Mercedes-Benz colour “calcite-white”.

Cooperation with the Volkswagen Zubehör GmbH a done deal

The latest major customer cooperative agreement has now been wrapped up in the direct vicinity of Wolfsburg: Kamei will also produce an exclusive line of roof boxes for Volkswagen Zubehör GmbH. Three different models in the Volkswagen design and made by Kamei celebrated their premiere at the 2008 automechanika trade fair. However, the developments are not limited to merely decorative travel companions. In future, for instance, Kamei will supply an underride guard made of solid-coloured plastic for the VW Tiguan accessory catalogue. The visually attractive and functional piece has several advantages: a paint job is not required and the weight of the plastic part is less than a comparable metal piece. Also, the plastic is very resilient.

Many years of experience in the production of plastic add-on parts

"We have many years of experience in the production of aerodynamic and other plastic add-on parts. Our production processes guarantee a high level of manufacturing quality and accuracy of fit. That serves us very well in this sector because automakers have long-range plans and high standards when it comes to quality," says Marian Meier-Andrae, who, as Managing Director, is responsible for the company's commercial management. "We're pleased that we were able to win over another industrial partner on the basis of our expertise. That's an interesting area of growth for us. In addition to developing our aftermarket business with KAMEI brand products domestically and internationally, we will also develop our activities as an OEM supplier for the automobile industry as a result of that

Auto “InfoTainment”: A Sector with Great Potential

Recent report shows that the global output of auto electronics is estimated to reach US$ 200B in 2010. This bit of encouraging news bodes well for the information technology industry.

The market potential of auto “infotainment” in particular has in recent years attracted the attention of both Taiwanese IT suppliers (e.g., Asus, BenQ, etc.) and foreign IT giants, like Microsoft and Intel. Meanwhile, the growing demand for more sophisticated electronic systems in the automobile is boosting the percentage of IT components, including semiconductors, sensors, PCs, LEDs, DVD players, LCDs, GPSs and so on, in auto production from 20% in 2006 to 40% in 2010.

Taiwan has long been a major player in the global auto parts market. Its auto parts industry boasts decades of development experience and strong support of the government. Taiwan’s annual output of auto parts in 2007 reached NT$ 153.5B (US$ 5.1B). On the other hand, production of autotronic components totaled NT$ 50B (US$ 1.67B).

Strict guidelines and regulations in the industry have actually helped improve production flexibility of the Taiwanese suppliers. Moreover, the shift in consumer demand toward greater driving safety and comfort encourages them to develop more advanced products.

INA Hydraulic Camshaft Phasing Unit with Central Valve

Caption:
The reaction times are considerably reduced and the timing velocity is increased by means of a central valve in INA’s hydraulic camshaft phasing unit. This facilitates optimized timing for various speeds and loads. Fuel consumption and emissions are reduced.

Herzogenaurach, September 2008. Using hydraulic camshaft phasing systems enables the angle of rotation of the camshaft in relation to the crankshaft to be varied ensuring optimum timing in a wide range of engine loads and speeds. Optimum valve timings directly affect driving performance and dynamics as well as fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions.

Camshaft phasing is continuously adjusted. During this process, a comparison is made between the target and actual angle by the engine management system and the phasing unit is filled with oil in the required adjustment direction via a solenoid valve, which sets the required timing.

The camshaft phasing unit is mounted on the camshaft with a central screw. However, in the new INA camshaft phasing system with central valve, the hydraulic component of the control valve is integrated in the central screw. This generates advantages in terms of space and timing velocity since the adjustment can take place even more quickly due to the spatial proximity of the valve and the phasing unit compared to conventional systems. This means that the valve timings can be corrected more quickly thereby optimizing engine power.

WD-40 Smart Straw™:

The liquid tool with 'brains'!

Whether it's freeing a rusty screw, cleaning and oiling a machine, protecting a tool from rust or displacing moisture from electrical contacts – with WD-40 it's easy.

The 'liquid tool' can be used with all types of private and commercial vehicles. The multi-purpose oil, WD-40, thanks to its ease of application and its already legendary versatility, is especially well suited for a whole range of uses in the area of automotive maintenance and care. It makes a significant contribution to extending the life of tools and machinery and so plays an important role in conserving precious natural resources.

The WD-40 Company has come up with an especially successful innovation by developing the WD-40 Smart Straw™. With the Smart Straw™, application is fast and easy, as the straw is attached directly to the spray nozzle. So WD-40 is always ready for use, everywhere. The Smart Straw enables both targeted spraying and a wide spraying action with one and the same can – which saves the user time and money. There's no having to search for and attach a straw before starting precision work. The Smart Straw from WD-40 pops up with just one click and folds back down again with another. At the same time, it can also spray through the nozzle. The revolutionary double spray system was developed over a three-year research project.

You will find the WD-40 Company at Automechanika in Hall 9.1, Stand B45

Nomadic Solutions to present their NS Vox 'vocal printer' at the Automechanika trade fair 2008

Melun, 01 September 2008 – Nomadic Solutions, the experts in on-board mobility and geolocation solutions (AVL, Automated Vehicle Location) have announced that they are to introduce their " NS-Vox® vocal printer".

NS-Vox is a real safety measure, as it is capable of converting all sorts of text messages into speech through vocal synthesis, using an OKI 'text to speech' processor, equipped with a phonemic database in 6 European languages. When Linked to communicating equipment (GSM/GPRS modem, GPS etc.) by means of an RS-232 serial port, NS Vox is ideal for use on the road, in monitoring centres, logistics centres or even as an addition to variable text displays.

Linked to a communication add-on, the NS-Vox really comes into its own and can, for example, receive SMS or GPRS messages directly and 'speak' them aloud to the recipient.

Its external appearance has been deliberately designed to be unattractive, as a deterrent to thieves when it is on the vehicle's dashboard.

Finally, it should be noted that there is also an OEM version available. Equipped with a 5V DC input and an audio output, it finds a natural home amongst other programmable devices. It is also an ideal solution for improving the independence of people who are visually impaired.

Light as bright as daylight for servicing and repairs

Picture:
Hella extends its range of garage lights by two new LED battery-operated hand lamps

Lippstadt/Frankfurt, September 2008. Hand lamps are indispensable in the garage for flexible use during vehicle servicing and repairs. Two new LED battery-operated hand lamps from Hella combine the advantages of the LED light source with the flexibility of an integrated power accumulator without a cable getting in the way.

The white high-performance LEDs are economical, powerful and durable, as well as being vibration-resistant – an important advantage in day-to-day garage use. They generate bright light similar to daylight and ensure optimum illumination, whether for quick visual inspections or repairs in the engine bay or on the underbody.
Hella supplies the new LED battery-operated hand lamps in two versions:

The HL 07-350 weighs only 500 grams, is 35 centimetres long and is five centimetres in diameter. 30 high-performance LEDs provide working light as bright as daylight.
The HL 09-395 weighs 545 grams, is just 40 centimetres long and is five centimetres in diameter. In this case, 60 high-performance LEDs produce the white, extremely bright light.

The high sturdiness and stability of the hand lamps is convincing. The grip is made of high-quality hard rubber, integrated knobs prevent the lamps rolling away on smooth and uneven surfaces. The round hook at the top end allows the lamps to be attached wherever they are needed on the vehicle. The scope of supply includes high-quality accumulator batteries as well as one charger each for the 220 V mains power supply and 12 V vehicle cigarette lighter socket. The chargers have an integrated excess-charge protection feature and switch off automatically when the batteries are full. On account of the high storage capacity and the economical LEDs, the hand lamps provide light for up to five hours, charging time is around 90 minutes. Both new models are CE-tested and are subject to protective rating IP54.

Rayzer illuminates the night

The Rayzer wide beam is a new kind of driving light. It is uniquely fitted on the inside of the windshield behind the rearview mirror. Its position provides drivers with a wider field of illumination and a much safer night driving experience.

Many conventional auxiliary lamps are fitted low on the chassis; they over-illuminate the road directly in front of the vehicle and might actually impair long distance visibility. Rayzer’s unique reflector and placement at the driver’s eye-level provides far superior lighting for the operator of the vehicle.

Rayzer’s placement inside the car prevents dirt from deteriorating the effect of the light, reduces vulnerability to theft, and minimizes the risk of damage.

In sharp contrast to older auxiliary lights, Rayzer is the only wide beam driving light on the market. It not only blends in as a natural part of a modern car’s design, it also keeps the vehicle’s aerodynamic qualities intact and therefore, the fuel consumption becomes lower compared to using a light mounted on the chassis.

Rayzer is wirelessly synchronized and automatically turns on when the car’s high beams are being used. Rayzer can also, from inside the car, be easily adjusted in height, as well as sideways.

Rayzer is brought to you by the Swedish company Visualeyes. Visualeyes is an innovative manufacturer of car accessories that increase safety and performance. The company was founded in 2006. Former professional formula race-car driver and current safety driving instructor, Lars Svelander, is the inventor of Rayzer.

Rayzer is currently available in shops in the Nordic region and on www.visualeyes.se. Rayzer’s estimated retail price is €685 ex VAT.

During Automechanica in Frankfurt, Visualeyes can be found in Hall 3.0 Aisle E Stand 30, at Calix AB’s stand.

Mobile Column Lift RGB -especially for Buses

Mobile Use: The Lift comes to the Vehicle

The joint use of four individual mobile columns each with a load capacity of up to 5.5 t means these kinds of vehicles can be lifted.
The lifting system is particularly efficient (over 90%) through the use of a recirculating ball nut and screw. Slim, versatile column design. The basic frame design makes for easy maneuverability of the lift even in tight spaces and requires limited space for storage.
Mobile column lifts can be moved to the vehicle and not the vehicle to the lift. Vehicle work can be done at various locations. Stands can be placed underneath the vehicle freeing up the mobile columns to be used on other vehicles.

Features and advantages of this system:
• No master column, no separate power supply unit
• Each column with its own electro-mechanic drive
• Automatic synchronisation is standard
• Control with function selection: joint, single or group operation
• Electronic switch off in end position, safety monitoring and travel measurement by non-contact inductive sensor
• Low basic frame height of 128 mm
• Slim column design, each with a low dead weight of 360 kg
• Carriage with fixed wheel forks for tires 8.25 to 12.00-20/12 R 22.5.

This product overview doesn't claim to be complete. It just gives you an impression of the program of selected manufacturers of the next Automechanika.
